Community

Education, Environment, Economics IconsBlack communities throughout the United States confront numerous social, educational, and economic obstacles that impede their access to adequate healthcare and nutrition. Systemic racism and harmful messaging from certain interest groups have further perpetuated negative stereotypes and undermined the well-being of Black individuals. UZIMA is dedicated to confronting these challenges directly and disseminating reliable, empowering information that challenges misconceptions and sheds light on critical issues that must be addressed to foster thriving Black communities.

Uzima Champions Dental Health Equity

Poor oral health can lead to a range of issues, such as tooth decay, gum disease, and even tooth loss. Additionally, gum disease has been linked to a higher risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, which disproportionately affect Black communities. Moreover, oral health can affect one’s ability to eat, speak, and socialize comfortably, which can impact one’s mental and emotional health. Therefore, it is essential for Black communities to prioritize oral health care, including regular dental checkups, proper brushing and flossing techniques, and a healthy diet, to maintain optimal overall health. That is why UZIMA has partnered with Leading Athletes to Continued Excellence, L.A.C.E. UP, since 2019 on events that promote healthy teeth and gums in Black communities.

Uzima Celebrates Strong Black Men and Their Love of Family

Black men are often stereotyped as absent or uninvolved in their families’ lives, particularly in regards to their children’s growth and development. However, studies have shown that Black fathers are just as committed and active in their children’s lives as fathers from other racial and ethnic groups. For instance, a 2019 study found that Black fathers who reported high levels of racial discrimination were more involved in their children’s lives as a way to counteract the negative effects of discrimination. It is crucial to challenge harmful stereotypes and recognize the many Black men who are committed to their families and communities.

Dr. K made the critical case for focusing on Black men’s health in a must-read article for a recent issue of N’Digo.

Uzima Celebrates Our Military Medical Doctors

For the next generation of Black youth to be inspired to join the ranks of military medical personnel, they need to see themselves represented. This representation has to be not just present, but visible. Without online visibility, the Black doctors serving in the U.S. Military medical ranks are the equivalent of a tree falling in a forest with no one around to hear it. We are proud to showcase the amazing military medical professionals serving today.
