Profiles of Black military physicians

For a next generation to be inspired to join the ranks of military medical personnel, it’s easier if representation is not just present, but visible.  Without online visibility, the Black doctors serving in the US medical ranks are the equivalent of a tree falling in a forest with no-one around to hear it.

So, to celebrate their service, here are some profiles:

Brittney L. Knotts, 2LT, USA, MS

BrittneyLKnottsI’m from Tuscaloosa, Alabama. From there, I went to the United States Military Academy at West Point then to the University of Alabama in Huntsville for a Masters in Biology and then to USU. I have matched into the urology residency program at Tripler Army Medical Center. My biggest passion in life is service. I believe that we all have been gifted with some special talent or ability and it is important for us to share that with those that would benefit most from it.

Ja’Qulane Scales, MPH, MS, ENS, MC, USNR

JaQulane ScalesJa’Qulane Scales is a native of Little Rock, Arkansas, and a first-generation college graduate. She graduated summa cum laude at Philander Smith College where she received her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with a double minor in Biology and Mathematics. After undergraduate studies, Ja’Qulane obtained a Master of Public Health from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences with a focus in Biostatistics and was inducted into the Delta Omega Honorary Society. She then received a Master of Science from the Uniformed Services University with a focus in Neuroscience. Ja’Qulane is a recent graduate of Howard University College of Medicine and was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society. She is an incoming PGY-1 at Naval Medical Center-San Diego.

She is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Ja’Qulane is a recipient of the Health Professions Scholarship Program and proudly serves as an officer in the United States Navy. She plans to become an Global Ophthalmologist serving locally in disadvantaged communities and abroad through humanitarian missions.

Patrick Singley, MD

Patrick SingleyPatrick did his undergraduate studies at the US Military Academy at West Point.  He then did Medical School at the Uniformed Services University and his Residency in Anethesiaology at Walter Reed Medical Center.

He says, ‘No dream is too big with the right amount of creativity’.
